| Starfish and barnacles “The sea shore is the meeting place of sea and land. It is for that reason the most fascinating and the most complex of all the environments of life”. C.M.Yonge Nature is prodigal in the endless vitality of its polymorphic structures; from the most powerful forces of the geocosm, the mountains and sea that surround us, to the most minute hidden details of our land based flora, a flower’s inflorescence or the patterned skein of lichens on a trees bark. However, for Meg Grounds the most vivid of all frontiers, and a metaphor for all that is most secret and revealing, is the micro-organic life in the zones of the inner-tide. Working in Balmacara Square and living in Torrin, she feels the penetration of our Island’s vibrancy of colours, forms and textures, which bond in the moment of perception, with the sensuous aspects of her creative desire and an artistic sense of sculptural integrity. With these inspirations she recreates in fibres, by knitting, sewing and felting, tactile creations to wear, display or simply enjoy. Ray MacKenzie |
